Removing George W. Bush
Evil has a face
The importance of removing George W. Bush blossomed in front of me on the screen. It kept blossoming in my conviction, later, after the movie.
Fahrenheit 9/11 strikes a chord. Rage, dissapointment, sorrow, all broiled up under my skin. The documentary revealed a crazy world, driven by greed. Nothing new. But with an overdosis that repelled. The only relief from that was found in the absurdly comic way in which the scenes were conveyed. Michael Moore´s collage of events and facts affirmed my wish: Remove him. Remove George W. Bush! Remove the evil, chop it in parts until unrecognizable.
Unrecognizable... when i think about that, better leave it a little bit recognizable, so that it might be recognized in the future, when another wealthy nerd comes along - since evil can not be subdued completely.
Bush attempted to create a false meaning in the life of the soldiers and in the conscience of the public in general. False for the soldiers because, as Moore says, sending out the troops should be the ultimate measure of conflict resolution, and not an arbitrary one. False for the public, because a war on terrorism is definitely not where a country´s ressources should be deployed to. The induced fear that goes along with such a stance only serves to turn people inwardly, as if the rest oft he world were a hostile environment. Department of Homeland Security?! Who'll know what´s right or wrong anymore?
If a leader is defined as someone you want to follow, than i don´t want to follow Bush. He is a pirat, a vain dog amidst a bunch of failed demagogues.
The economic situation around the world is not going to tolerate the United States being on top forever. Be alert to that, don´t expect other countries or people to surrender to american ways and beliefs. This is what i take as the message from the attacks of 9/11. A wake up call to make selfish America shake off the blindfolds, and start looking around at what is going on. A slap in the face to which a war on terrorism is merely a desperate impulsive reaction. I despise it. I think it serves no one but to still a need to feel in control.
If i can´t access it or can´t understand it, i kill it. Wow, survival of the fittest in grand manier.
I feel there is a pattern in human history that will always repeat. If humans are not compelled to unite in order to fend of some exogenous force, like extreme cold, they fight each other. That will never stop. Envy and greed will always clash. But even in extreme colds, such as 24.000 years ago, the hunters and gatherers would still steal from each other. The time we live in is no more than a blink of the eye, a short moment in geological terms. Yet we feel we are so advanced, rational and mighty. But more likely than that we are no more than animals with the little difference that we are moral as well (more on that in The Moral Animal, by Robert Wright).
Bush was ready to risk a lot for the sake of a better future. As ambitious as this sounds, it is merely an action frame. It needs to be filled with content. He had no convincing content. Nothing that made sense, besides revenge or a natural taste for oil. Did it really make no sense? Considering that humans naturally exploit other humans to whom no bonds exist, it makes perfectly sense. A harsh reality? Or just: a reality.
It surely must be a great challenge to be president and decide how involved to get with the world outside the borders of one´s country. Afraid of acting he is not, as his bold invasion shows. But did we really believe that you could drop bombs over another society and have its people welcome the conquerors? Making the conquered slaves to food and needs surely will make some run to you. But what kind of welcome is that? Humiliating people, debasing people first, and than offering a helping hand is a grotesque experience into which Bush trailed everyone else after him. But the majority of prideful people will rather die hungry or fight till death before kissing american ass. Any prideful people would prefer to enable change from within, rather than forced violent change from outside.
Bush is the first President with an MBA degree. Mabye this partly explains his conduct, since acting first, and reasoning afterwards might gain you a comptetitive advantage. The idea is to be ahead of competition at all cost, thus letting strategy fall into place, once you are on the way. Trying things first, and reasoning afterwards - when you spin this further, planning for the future may become obsolete. You might feel there is no time to grant you or the competitor. The idea of The future is now then becomes the ultimate delusion that you are in control today.
What is changable? Human greed? No. They say that nothing will be the same after 9/11, but what is nothing? Nothing has changed, people are as greedy as before, with the difference that some may play their greed out more than others. America has proven itsself before a bunch of Iraki kids hiding in the bushes. America has taken preventive action, because. Period. The word preventive does not require explanation, since that is why it's called preventive. Please don´t ask. Leave it to the president, right? What do the lifes of a few Irakis matter if you can have lots of oil in return? To have a fat stake in the region is definitely not wrong.
Anyways, who cares? People get on with their own lifes, no one commits the time to understanding why things happen, if it doesn´t affect you or your kindsmen or the future of your children. Better trust the president, because if we don´t trust each other, where do we end up?
Control is something for decision makers relying on tools for rational analysis, and apparently their illusion of the world in numbers can be exploited so readily by those with power = money. Power= leaderhsip = instilling sense in life (the ideal) is probably always connected with fighting against something (the tragic ideal). And how do you get people to back you and the fight? By instilling fear in them.
As people usually devote all their attention to their own lifes, we don´t have the time to understand each and every other thing going onaround us. In order to cope, we have to trust that others do their job as they are supposed to do. Politicians seem to abuse this justified ignorance in the public. Since everybody is so focused on his or her little life, there is less time to make judgments. As a consequence, only the most clear signals get through to us, such as things that instill fear. Which is what happend in the United States, which made everybody nod to going to war, which caused evil to spread all too easily. Which is a disaster surely going to be repeated in the future.
How do we prepare?
First, replace George W. Bush. Please vote for change!
I have given up to call capitalism capitalism. Why not rename capitalism to anarchy, where government is just a label for a group o people who claim their own freedoms? A label like Al-Kaeda.
Human pride would probably have to be cut out of us before we are able to give up the idea, that we can control/govern things.
