The only reason i´d consider a notebook larger than 12-inch (or 13-inch) is because of a larger display. The advantage of portability to me outweights the benefit of a larger screen. Portability to me means being able to ride my bicycle and carrying with me my notebook light and small.
Using an external display in addition to the built-in display is a fair enough solution to increase screen surface (- altough the built-in display was not made to fold back completely so i could place an external display right in front of me).
However that´s not nearly as good as it would be if i could attach displays of different sizes. While on the road i would use the standard display. When i am at home i could attach a larger display. If it were not for the display sizes, i see no reason why a notebook chassis should be any larger than Apple´s 12-inch PowerBook chassis (leaving aside industrial design considerations).
If chassis and display were seperated and could be joined with an extendable connector, i could hang the display onto the wall or move it around on the desk, which would faciliate collaborative working, watching movies, etc..
I would like to see a notebook from Apple (MacBooks) that includes a standard display bundled with the chassis, but gives me an option to buy an additional large display (15-inch or 17-inch) that could either replace the standard display or be connected in addition to it. Also, if the display would not depend on being attached directly to the chassis to work, it would use a cable/dock and be movable.

Yes! This would solve my problem of trying to decide which display to buy!
Make it happen! :)
Good idea! I would like this to happen with a removable screen with multi touch user interface which serves as tablet for creative work or surfing the web or... . What about a technology that makes the screen simply expandable (flexible LCD?).
And now lets create a user platform to co-create the next generation of hot products.
