Authenticity: How to loose yourself?

Philosophy

This post is inspired by What's authentic at metacool. I'll take a stab at finding principles for authenticity. What is authenticity?

A person, product or place may seem pretentious, displaced, or lost. When something lacks authenticity then there must be reasons. But when something seems authentic then people must lack reasons to argue it away.

If authenticity were color, i would be percieve it as white, stainless. It would hide the visible colors and contain them at the same time. You can recognize authenticity best by the abscence of any coloration, by the abscence of any reasons that could induce a feeling that something is not pure about a person, object or place.

Therefore there are no fundamental rules to achieve authenticity. There are as many recipies to enjoy it as there are people on earth. Each of us has a voice of self, a unique voice. We reflect on each other and overlap each other. People are not composed of a hard center that represents the true, authentic self. We are composing ourselves by aquiring qualities out of a common pool. The compositions are different, the ingredients are the same. Authenticity is vainful, full of vain, or void of all, whichever you like.

Any attempt to construe authenticity may bring you closer to yourself. It is good to have benchmarks. But there are not any fundamental principles that could apply across all contexts.

Authenticity is noticable through lack of noise, not through addition of qualities that can amount to it. If you want an authentic salad, don't mix tomatoes and olive oil into it. Enjoy the green leaves only and you will have an authentic experience. Well no, it is not that easy. There is italian salad, american salad etc.. Each salad style has its own character and can be distinguished. Distinctiveness thus helps authenticity. But it is never a requisite.

There are certainly ways to make people, products or places more authentic. This can happen not by adding stuff, but by avoiding stuff that causes other people to percieve flaws. Her is an example. WebNews.de is a copy of digg.com. It works well and the localisation of digg.com to aggregate german news makes sense of course. However, they just forgot  to give digg.com some credit. That makes the project less authentic (a less authentic copy) to me because the builders do not behave as they expect their participants to behave. Digg cool stuff!! Give credit!! Promote people and stories. Damn fools!

We are born authentic. The rest of life is about recovering it. As we grow older we loose authenticity in two ways. We find answers to who we are and we find restraints to who we could be. The first process lets you be yourself without finding it difficult to explain why. State of equilibrium. The second process lets you grow and expend yourself. State of trouble.

If you are a fisherman and dream about being a dancer, then does that make you less authentic? No. You can accomplish any task you set your mind to and dream about other things all the while. People may hear sadness in the voice of the fisherman. That gives hope. Because something inside of him is still talking, even though his occuputation does not match up to his dream. That's authentic. You can be authentic while your hands, your heart and your mind each pursue their own agenda.

Authenticity is what other people feel in reaction to something. The feeling informs you to move you closer. Yet attraction is not a requisite to engender  authenticity.

Can you be authentic while you are self-conscious? Yes. An actor who knows his lines can concentrate on how to act himself into being someone. The same applies in real life. You talk yourself into action and act yourself into believing.

Are plants authentic? The unimpeded path of a tree rising into the sky does not leave traces of dishonest growth. Can a tree be percieved as pretentious by its peers? Plants are. Humans make believe.

As a man, you can convert yourself into a woman. Does that make you less authentic. Yes, clearly not. Pun intended.

To demand to be authentic is to demand not to seem pretentious.  It appears that even this simple rule of thumb can not help you to build more authentic places. Paris in Las Vegas is part of what makes Las Vegas the Las Vegas. The focus here is not on Paris, but on Las Vegas. They built a copy of Paris into Las Vegas not to make you feel in Paris, but to make you feel in Las Vegas. So, the fake experience of Parisian flair is authentically lasvegian.

To get along, we need to copy from each other to cope with each other. This starts very early. A child that does not copy from its parents will die. A business that does not adapt to better ways of business might die, but it does not make itself more authentic by refusing to adapt. Copying does not preclude authenticity. It helps it! Whatever you do already exists, and has already happend. Blissfull ignorance of other people's achievements does spur your own creative authentic act, but copying is unavoidable. Remember we are made of DNA. So you would have to be a vampire, suck my blood and cause me to  implode to understand my utterly authentic makeup.

Let's look at some more ways to produce authenticity. Each time i'll show that each method is as reliable as a gust of wind out of nowhere.

Does meaningfullness install authenticity? Being meaningful is no prerequisite to authenticity either. You can be a lousy, uninspired, timid dog, and truely yourself. You can sound very meaningless, and yet be quiet authentic at that.

Johnny Depp is an actor. But he is authentic, is he not? He is not because he relies on a strong voice, or because he is particularly opinionated. Playing a role makes perfect sense if what you convey creates meaning for yourself or others. You don't have to stick to the facts or sound reasonable to appear authentic. If something seems like something else, both can be authentic. Authentic movies are the result of faking real things.

You don't have to please others to earn a reputation of authenticity. Hitler for example was quiet authentic from what i hear.

Being uncompromising helps authenticity. This is my favorite method. Your ignorance of outside pressures and a strong conviction keeps you real. A strong point of view however is never a requisite for authenticity. You can be clearly recognizable and contrasting and different, and yet be a cheater.

Authenticity is just a word. Evolutionary speaking it is a descendant of caution and suspicion. Humans are very good at identifying cheaters. Our memories evolved as a consequence of the pressures to survive. It was mandatory to be able to record who cheated in the past so we could avoid contact with that person. We don't want to expense energy onto something if that investment does not increase our chance of someone giving back along the way. This explains why authenticity is found in the lack of reasons that could install distrust. Our memories do not record authentic states, but rather deviations from them.

Authenticity is not about matching expectations - just a little bit. Apple made me believe that the new iPods would ship with the new earbuds. The iPod shuffle however is still being shipped with the old ones. That does not make Apple less authentic. It was just a marketing communication thing gone awry.

In contrast, trust does rely on expectations. Trust can be fostered by overcoming first impressions (it is risky to overlook things that seem strange) and by repeated interactions. I can distrust a person or place that occurs very authentic to me. But i wouldn't eagerly want to trust someone who is not. Authenticity informs trust. I think that both are actually quiet flux. You can talk for hours and hours and sound very plausible. But then a tiny bit of your voice might reveal that there is maybe a hidden agenda and this can ruin the whole trust building. On the positive side, the fragility of trust building makes room to forgive and to continue expecting the best from others. We bury the past fast. Why else did Bush get re-elected?

People do interact with businesses that are not authentic. Who knows why? I guess because we have to short-cut our way through all the offerings and often don't have the time or knowledge to get real close to what's real.

A clear vision is a foolish guide to authenticity. Would you follow your leader to death just because he unerringly insinsts on one idea while a change in direction would have been better? Wow, this guy had stamina. Wow, he is so dead now. Authenticity does not require that you don't change with time.

I can't tell you why Threadless is authentic. It just feels this way. The people involved look and sound like themselves. That is not because people are involved in the process of making t-shirts, or because co-creation resonates with the worldview of others. There are a thousand ways to do that, all of which aren't destined to be less authentic.

I don't know why this topic gobbled me up. I surrender and admit that i could not find enough grip to find any univeral method to produce authenticity. I'd say, loose yourself but don't get lost. It doesn't really matter if the wind in your sails is real or virtual. It is always both. As long as you make way, the progress you make is as real as that of dead driftwood.

If you are authentic as a person this means you have integrity to what matters to you. Your big hairy audacious goals must be real, but the world doesn't want to know everything you are thinking. We have different selves in different roles. However, you should only reveal your thoughts, if it supports your goal or establishes integrity for your mission.

Authenticity in business is can be artificially crafted or natural. Both works equally well. Authenticity is about integrity and being in focus with your brand values, which means pissing some people off and not trying to please everyone. Authenticity is about creating something remarkable. It is not about perfection. On the contrary little (artificial) flaws make products especially luxury goods more authentic.
The image of Apple for example is carefully crafted (observe how the people in the iPod commercials are sooooo differnt by turning their backs to you which is supposed to signal un-belonging to the masses). That is carefully crafted brand image. Nontheless, I love Apple, because their products are authentic (unique) and they stick to their philosophy.
