Just two years ago, I was told in psychology class that consciousness is particular to humans - something that guides our behavior and that helps to perceive us in relation to the environment. Most of what we routinely do, is invoked unconsciously. The orthodox view is that animals don't really have consciousness, because they don't look onto themselves as acting individuals. This view, that consciousness belongs to us, immediately pales compared to the idea that it is everywhere and that our brain just filers out some of it.
