Address Book is almost great
Keeping in touch with people is not my forte. I don't need the daily blabla, but realize that i want to get better at this and follow-up with people whom I haven't contacted in a while. Often you just know whom you should talk to, but with a growing contact list in Address Book, I want to get some computing power involved in facilitating this task.
I use Things to manage calls and keep memos of conversations. Before Things, i used Omni Outliner Professional for memos. I still use it as an alternative. But what about Address Book? How can Address Book help me with this task?
I have been using the notes field in Address Book all along to tag cards, to then group them with Smart Groups. But how can I let Address Book group people with whom I haven't been in touch for - say, at least one month?
The obvious approach to give cards a time dimension is to use the Dates field. So I added a Dates field to my Template and named it 'Last contact'. This gives me the option to add the date on which i have called or met a person.
The next step was to create a Smart Group with the intention to group all those cards with set dates that are older than one month. In combination with a rule that captures all those cards that contain the word monthly in the notes field, this would be an effective way to create follow-up cycles with people whom I want/have to be in touch with at least once a month.
To my dismay, I found that Address Book limits rules for the Dates field to future dates. Why! There is no 'is in the last' option (or 'is greater than' like in Thunderbird) to capture cards whose dates are in the past.
Why Apple? Just one tiny option more, and Address Book would be suitable to help me lift my social life to a whole new level!! No wonder this app doesn't belong to iLife. It is not able to keep track of how much you mingle.
